Gowanus Gardens

Type of Project: Speculative Design, Motion Design, Poster Design

Design Objective: Conduct research on a problem within a specific region of NYC. Come up with a design response to address the problem.

Design Notes:

  • This project was a collaboration between Veronica Garcia and myself.

  • Gowanus is a luxury neighborhood in Brooklyn that was built on a Superfund site. I collaborated with Veronica Garcia to imagine a future in which residents have to grow their own crops and make use of the contaminated land and water.

  • The entire project is a satire meant to bring attention to the absurdity of paying insane NYC prices for housing in a highly polluted area, and how we accept terrible environmental conditions as if they're normal.

We also created this satirical EPA warning poster to present what we learned.

We designed seed packets for futuristic and fictional plants that incorporated some real information on Gamma Gardens. We researched what can grow in Chernobyl and took creative liberties with the rest.

We designed stop-motion animations of our growing fictional plants to consider how our project could live in a digital space. The animations added some much-needed movement and allowed our project to feel more dynamic.
