Fixing Food Waste

Type of Project: UX Design, Storyboards, Poster Design

Design Objective: Research a problem and come up with potential design solutions. Make use of storyboards, personas, pain points, etc. Design a poster to illustrate your work. Develop a prototype and test it on users.

Design Notes:

  • Project Drawdown ranks reducing food waste as the third most impactful action towards slowing climate change.

  • For my user research, I created a survey about grocery shopping, refrigerator and freezer use, composting, and throwing away food to determine where food waste takes place.

  • I researched solutions that already exist—specifically focusing on sustainable food generators, ways to redesign the kitchen/cooking experience, and ways to redesign the dining experience.

  • I determined that the best solutions would be to create a new way to cook and eat which would involve visuals and sounds, or to create a sustainable meal kit that also included kitchen tools.

  • The biggest issue is that our culture has a hard time accepting insects into our diet. The kit could work if it did not involve mealworms, or if the mealworms were made more palatable (like as a powder).

This was my initial prototype for a sustainable cooking kit. The COVID pandemic shut things down right at this time so I made everything with what I had on hand.

After incorporating some feedback from my user testing, I created a second prototype that had some branding and also included a guide and a video introduction.

I created this cooking video so users would understand how to use the kit and to demonstrate how easy it was. It is meant to mimic the videos that are popular on the internet, made by Tasty.
